2006

The Stories of Mary Gordon by Mary Gordon, published by Pantheon Books,
was named the winner of The Story Prize at the New School's Tishman
Auditorium in New York City on the evening of Jan. 25, 2006. The other
two finalists for The Story Prize were Rick Bass for The Lives of Rocks
(Houghton Mifflin) and George Saunders for In Persuasion Nation
(Riverhead Books). After all three authors read from their books and
discussed their work with Director Larry Dark, Gordon returned to the
stage to accept the first prize of $20,000 and an engraved silver bowl.
The Story Prize chose the finalists from among 65 books of short
fiction published by 44 publishers and imprints in 2006. Judges Edwidge
Danticat, Ron Hogan, and Mitchell Kaplan selected Gordon's book as the
winner. This is the third year of The Story Prize. Last year's winner
was Patrick O'Keeffe for The Hill Road (Viking).
2005

On January 25, 2006 Irish author Patrick O'Keeffe was awarded The Story Prize for 2005 for his book The Hill Road. He received the award before an audience of over 400 at the New School's Tishman Auditorium in New York City. The other two finalists were Jim Harrison for The Summer He Didn't Die (Atlantic Monthly Press) and Maureen F. McHugh for Mothers & Other Monsters (Small Beer Press).
2004

The inaugural winner of The Story Prize, for collections of short fiction published in 2004, was announced on January 26, 2005 at Symphony Space. The evening consisted of performances of stories from the three books selected as finalists, as part of the Selected Shorts series. Edwidge Danticat took the honors for The Dew Breaker. The other finalists were Cathy Day for The Circus in Winter and Joan Silber for Ideas of Heaven.
