About The Story Prize

The winner of The Story Prize receives $20,000 and each finalist $5,000. The past winners have been Edwidge Danticat, Patrick O'Keeffe, Mary Gordon, Jim Shepard, Tobias Wolff, Daniyal Mueenuddin, Anthony Doerr, Steven Millhauser, Claire Vaye Watkins, George Saunders, Elizabeth McCracken, Adam Johnson, Rick Bass, and, most recently, Elizabeth Strout.

The final deadline for submitting 2018 books is November 15, 2018. We’ll announce three finalists in early January, and the judges will choose the winner from among those books.

We'll announce the winner of The Story Prize at an event on March 6 at The New School, in association with The New School Creative Writing Program. That night the three finalists will read from and discuss their work before the winner is announced.

This is the 15th year of The Story Prize, which was established in 2004. An anthology of stories by the fourteen past winners, The Story Prize: 15 Years of Great Short Fiction, will be published by Catapult Books in March 2019.

The Story Prize is a $20,000 book prize awarded to the author of the collection of short stories named best of the year by a distinguished jury.

The Story Prize ― which recognizes the best story collection to be published each year ― has quickly established itself as a nifty jewel in a writer’s crown.
